Post-Surgery Tips for Dental Implants
Many people in Edmonton choose dental implants when considering tooth replacement options. Dental implants do, however, require surgery, and you will therefore need to go through a period of surgical recovery.
Immediately after your dental implant surgery in Edmonton you'll need to be careful not to disturb the area with your fingers or tongue. Increase your intake of fluids to keep hydrated, but avoid using straws. It is also important that you avoid smoking and don't jump right into any strenuous activities.
Managing Pain After Dental Implant Surgery
Some pain and swelling is to be expected after dental implant surgery. Applying ice to the area is crucial for minimizing both. You can begin applying a cold pack as soon as you get home, keeping it on for 20 minutes and removing it for 20 minutes at a time. Pain can also be controlled by taking pain medication recommended by your dentist.
It is also not unusual to experience some minor bleeding in the surgical area. For heavier bleeding you can simply place a piece of gauze over your gums and bite down firmly to hold it in place.
Diet After Dental Implant Surgery
For about 10 days to 2 weeks following dental implant surgery you'll want to stick to a diet of soft foods that don't require much chewing. Some good, filling, and nutritious foods that you can fill up on include oatmeal, yogurt, applesauce, scrambled eggs, smoothies, soup, and mashed potatoes. Treat yourself with some ice cream, pudding, or a milkshake once in awhile as well.
You should also try not to intake any beverages which are too hot or which are carbonated. Juice, water, milk, and cooled tea and coffee are all fine to have.
Oral Hygiene After Dental Implant Surgery
The accumulation of bacteria and food particles can lead to infection after dental implant surgery, so it is important to keep your mouth clean. Right after surgery you should rinse your mouth every 2 to 3 hours with warm salt water, and continue to do so 3 to 4 times daily over the following 2 weeks.
You can start brushing your teeth as usual the day after surgery, but be careful to avoid the operated area with your toothbrush until it has had time to heal.
