How Invisalign® Works

Invisalign® uses thermoplastic to create a strong mould that fits over your teeth. Successive moulds will make gradual adjustments to your teeth, straightening them over the course of several months. When you first visit us in Edmonton for Invisalign®, you’ll notice that the aligner that fits over your teeth will likely cause a bit of discomfort, as your teeth simply aren’t accustomed to being shifted. However, after about a week, the small amount of discomfort or pain will subside.

The aligners may also include what are known as “attachments.” They are small, tooth-coloured pieces of dental bonding that are strategically placed on the tooth to promote alignment of certain teeth that the aligner alone may have trouble shifting on its own. The attachment serves as an anchor point for the aligner to be fully effective and get you one step closer to a straighter smile!

Proper Aligner Care

Straightening your teeth in Edmonton with Invisalign® is a rather convenient process, but that doesn’t mean you can forget about properly maintaining your aligners! At Bonnie Doon Dental Associates, we recommend the following steps for proper Invisalign® care:

  • Rinse your aligners each time you remove them if possible. If saliva and plaque are allowed to dry, they combine to form a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Sanitize your aligner by soaking it daily in a cleaning solution. We recommend denture cleaner and the official Invisalign® cleaning solution.
  • Be sure to routinely brush and floss your teeth before reinserting the aligner. If food particles are trapped in between the aligner and the surface of your teeth, it makes for poor dental hygiene and dental issues.
  • Routinely—and gently—brush your aligners. Hard brushing will scratch your aligners.

How to Get Invisalign®

If you would like to straighten your teeth with Invisalign® in Edmonton, visit the dentists at our office. First, we take preliminary moulds and x-rays of your teeth. Then your general dentist examines the data to determine if Invisalign® would work for you. If Invisalign® could help you, we use the collected data to design aligning trays and a treatment plan. You will receive your first few Invisalign® aligners once they have been manufactured.

How Treatment Works

As a part of your treatment plan, you meet with your dentist every 4-6 weeks to evaluate your progress. At each appointment, you will receive several pairs of Invisalign® braces. Wear your aligners for 22 hours a day and switch to a new pair after two weeks.
